Aside from the fact that viruz was a blatant hacker at multiple points on RU, nerzyman would have wrecked him easily. Viruz was almost pure macro, he would overmacro and screw over his resources at times by over commitment to expanding over army. You could literally just keep every mine scouted and he would die trying to throw up bases over and over.
Nerzyman had a much cleaner balance as far as offense vs expanding. Nerzy's problem in war2 lied in his micro, he was sloppy and inefficient with his units at times, which is common for the average war2 macro player, but you need to be able to tell when it's better to micro a situation, or not. This was a weakness he remedied in sc2.
Everyone has their own perception of who the greats were, but the game at its peak was dominated by nerz and i. People didn't macro nearly as hard as nerzyman before he did, and his macro game was born from my boredom with war2, because the game got so easy to me I just started handicapping myself and doing off the wall strategies for amusement, sadly these were still effective over 50% of the time vs the "best" players. Sure there were greats on kali, but the game was different back then, rts has come a long way in general, from war2 to sc to bw to sc2. If nerz played war2 actively right now he would be even better than before, but it took a lot of sc2 play to get him to the next level, because ultimately it is just a better rts. What war2 does well is really emphasize the very raw and basic aspects of an rts, where sc2 can get a little too convoluted at times.
Anyone that doesn't realize that nerz was significantly better in his prime, than anyone else in their prime (except maybe kgbagent97 and obviously speaking of gow ef) just doesn't really understand the nuances of war2.

We occasionally talk about the good ole days of warcraft2 and various other games and what is skillful and what isn't.
What a lot of war2 players don't realize, but something very common in the professional bw and sc2 scene(s) is that there is a difference between conditioned behavior and natural understanding. If someone sits there practicing a build order, and a few variations based on what is happening, there is some sorta skill in that, but ultimately war2 wasn't complex enough to make that a true feat. What makes the greats stand out is their natural understanding and quick thinking. There were very few people that had a great understanding as well as great mechanics, because of that the game became way too easy and some of us had to humor ourselves with strats that had no build order and were completely on the fly.
As far as Ash and KHB. KHB was similar to viruz in that he had too much emphasis on macro play.. Ash was better all around in that ash was the type of player who would be more effective with 2 bases than khb would be with 3 bases, but they were both strong players.
I really can't consider anyone that hacked competitively a great player, because they were all pretty much cookbookers that gained that little bit of extra efficiency with their 3rd party knowledge.
