Freelancing
Has anyone on here ever freelanced in a technical field with any success?
I'm thinking about trying to get some freelance jobs for data analysis, database work, etc. I just got bumped up to a supervisor role at work so I don't get to dig in the data like I used to (that was the fun part) and I've also got more time on the evenings and in the weekends. I know tons of small companies use software packages now that collect all sorts of data and they never do anything with any of it.
I'm doing private Excel tutoring on the weekends for $45/hr now and I have to turn down new people because I don't like it much and don't want to spend that much time on it, but I feel like I could probably be making a lot more with that time if I were building databases or something.

I'd say the best tip I can give is to find out what you can charge before setting a price and don't deal with any idiots (You can spot them a mile away)

Yeah idiots are people who don't know how to do business and want to just fuck around and are wishy/washy.
I only deal with people who make decisions and pay bills. I just set them straight up front if I detect they're an idiot. I lay out my ground rules clear as day - I'm not talking to them for free. I charge by the hour, if something takes me 5 minutes, they're still being charged an hour etc.
In web dev this is my biggest issue. Some people just want to have a 3 hour long conversation about what ifs and then change their minds and not want to pay you for something you've done because they don't want it anymore. I don't deal with these people anymore but if you're advertising on public sites like craigslist or something you're going to get a fuckton of these people.
