Faster levels obviously. Smithing first at 6 is the normal build, but for some reason viruz claims it as
his
revolutionary build. Because you're building grunts later you have more money banked up to have a steadier continous flow of grunts by the time the rax(s) are done. Given good UC, it works well when pstopping in 12v2. _________________ <[TD]ViRuZ> You have balls...I like balls

The key with smith first is that you try to hit if possible when your level increases. You'll have a level advantage.

I do it to put on early pressure that prevents weak powering, and only from 9 because I like the res there. I find it doesn't slow my tech progression at all and it gives me the upper hand for the early part of the game.

it does give a slight level advantage if your UC is good enough to hit at the right time. _________________ I don't think anyone has unlimited time, and that seems like a particularly strange conclusion to draw from about 20 minutes worth of posting on a message board. Hassan-i-Suckah

i wouldn't smith first in any situation, the one level difference can easily be UC'd off by a good player, it's just not a good idea, especially if you're 6, you need to rep a rax to defend yourself, it's so head slappingly simple. The only reason viruz can do so is because he's so fast. Poscow is just an idiot. Trying to duplicate what viruz does if you're starting out or don't play very often isn't a good idea, it's like using a NFL playbook at the little league game, it's not going to work out well. You'll want to scout first priority if you're a player that likes to keep his/her options open, or you could be a player like valkrie/shotgun and just go to level 3 and play garden of get lust even gayer.
My advice is, smith first is a pretty irrelevant thing to worry about in 90% of games, best just forget about it.
Or if you'd like go ahead and do it, just don't come crying when you're already towered before you get your first grunt. Unless you repair your rax, and then we'd have a discussion that is far too indepth for a forum. Granted you weren't thinking about repairing in the first place.
Conclusion: for the most part, who cares? it's not going to win or lose you a game, focus on more important things. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbL6Gstg954

Really? That's shocking, I haven't seen but a few players do it.

You don't need to smith first to have a "steadier continous flow of grunts" though?

I always thought of smith first as a more efficient way to play. You're going to need the levels anyways, and if you're one level ahead of your opponent that more than makes up for the extra grunt or 2 you could have made during the time lost. It just kind of sucks if you get towered early or if your opponent is dualing.

Smith first is good in 1v1, but be careful in team games. When 12/2 players often level 1 rush without scouting, including viruz. Be sure to build your barracks first so you can start training footmen as soon as possible. Youll be glad you did when those first five level one grunts come running in. I like to go barracks first so i can start sending footmen to my ally earlier if he is getting towered.
