12 years a slave is pretty good tho. probably one of the only movies about slavery i've ever seen that doesn't whitewash it in some way

i really liked it too. really liked django as well. did u read the FFC criticism of 12 years a slave? their take is that slavery is so horrible on its own that what 12 years a slave did with the subject matter was exploitative...

oh yeah, shame is very good. i always forget the same guy did both movies. michael fassbender is a beast, he owns in everything i've seen him in
tbh i haven't read FFC in awhile but i just read it. i did think at times the movie got a little melodramatic, the example of the slave getting killed on the slave ship i think is probably the most egregious example i can think of and that's brought up in the review (it mostly bothered me just because it wasn't historically accurate at all--slaves were valuable property, why would someone who's not even the slave's owner get to murder them and throw the body in the ocean like trash?)
on the whole though i think chaw is trying too hard, i dunno. while i agree it was melodramatic at times, and does come off as a "prestige movie," i don't really buy that its whitewashing because he only whips her 10 times instead of 40 like in the book (some things don't work as well on screen as they do on the page) or because it doesn't go into the more complicated attitudes slaves had towards their captors, though i do think glossing over the latter was a bit of a missed opportunity. overall i agree with some of the guy's criticisms but i think he makes them into a bigger deal than they really are, him comparing it to the color purple especially sounds like grandstanding, i wouldn't be surprised if he thought up the comparison before even seeing the movie
