The most basic tip I can give you is to never stop making peons. As soon as one peon finishes you should create another.
Make a lumber mill before you upgrade from town hall to stronghold. Go stronghold at roughly 17 peons or so (of course this all depends on what is going on in the game).
One thing that never changes though is the non-stop creation of peons.
