I hotkey everything its the best way. As Bam said you don't even need to go back to ur base, your can just press them from anywhere while not losing your focus. Not only do I hotkey raxes, but I hotkey halls so I can focus on other events without always going back to my base to train units. Also its much faster. Early on I generally don't use hotkeys on my halls as much as late game.

Space bar and hotkeys will improve your game if you get used to using them, although I'm constantly trying to get used to hotkeying certain buildings, i normally end up just using space bar :/
Well hotkeying is better for more complext games like war3. U can have 12 units selected at the same time and during fights its hard to select units directly. So i admit that when i played war3, i used ctrl on my units groups. On war2 clicking is so easy, no 3D or anything. Its possible to be real fast with the mouse.

I never used the spacebar. I'm sure that it'd make you a tiny bit more efficient if you got used to using that along with every other hotkey, but who cares..

i dont use spacebar and i dont hotkey halls and raxes (im talking about ctrl-1234567890).
But im damn fast with the mouse. When i dual, i simply click on the base i want to go to on minimap. This way i get there BEFORE the peons pop and therefore BEFORE anyone that uses spacebar to cycle.
not as fast as hotkeys tho.
I seriously dont agree. if u have 5 raxes hotkeyed, u have to click 1 o 2 o 3 o 4 o 5 o, while i just have to click o o o o o, while browsing my raxes with the mouse real fast. You just need to build your raxes near from each others, which i always do.
You must be pretty damn fast with the mouse, since I can press 1o2o3o4o5o in under a second using the keyboard... _________________ i zero bagged your mother

Besides the fact that I probably wont change my playing style after all these years, hotkeying your hall is a bit strange. What happens when you order a peon without having to go to your hall? It means that the peon who was just finished is standing there doing nothing...

You got it right. You NEED to get to your hall in order to order an action to that peon. It makes hotkeying halls pretty much useless.

Well, people develop certain habits based on how the game was played when they first started playing. Mostly on the speed and common maps for the era. As you lower the speed and increase the map selection, attention to certain details during the game is more important then optimizing overall patterns of play.
So it isn’t really a fair comparison to compare how someone played then, or even how they play now, to how the game is played now. If those people were at the head of the heard when the competition had 100 times the players, it’s likely they’d be at the top, should they take the time to break those bad habits, and readjust to focus on things that are more important under today’s game play.
Also, in response to Guan’s and Kanuk’s post about hotkeying halls. The reason I do it, is so I can still continue to train peons while I’m focusing on grunts. Of course I return quickly to put them on gold, but in early grunt battles, or while busting a dual with cats/towers, watching your grunts to micro them a bit can put you at a huge advantage. I still do a lot of manually clicking on the hall, but it’s nice to get yourself in a pattern of using the Hotkeys while you’re battling early.
