Worldwide fast-food strike planned for May 15
Fast-food workers all across America have not given up on their demands for a living minimum wage. On May 15, they will be joined by their counterparts across the globe in an international demand for fair wages and the right to form a union.
The SEIU was behind the strikes in 100 U.S. cities last year, calling for a minimum wage of $15. The union argues that around the world, fast food workers, primarily young people, are living in poverty because of the low wages they are being paid. The movement has taken wing and grown to include participants in over 150 cities across the U.S. as well as over 35 countries.
Hundreds of workers are planning walk-outs in cities like St. Louis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Oakland, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. A number of new cities will also join the movement for the first time this year, including Philadelphia, Miami, Orlando, and Sacramento.
According to Salon, walk-outs are planned in Karachi, Casablanca, London, Sao Paolo, Dublin, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Geneva, and San Salvador, as well as locations in India, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Japan. In Auckland, New Zealand, activists plan to hold a teach-in at McDonald's Head Office. There are also plans to stage five flash mobs at McDonald's locations in the Philippines, and to shut-down a major McDonald's location during lunchtime in Belgium.
