The screenshare option is pretty awesome too if you want to show people stuff (good if you want to show people how to port foward on war2!). And talking to them over microphone. I don't know if AIM does this, i've never used it, and skype is better then Ventrilo/Teamspeak becaue you don't get assholes who'll randomly join the channel scream a bunch of shit and leave, you need to simply invite the people you want to the to the Skype Call.
You can call any family overseas etc and not pay a cent, speaking will be alot better then over the phone, as the crap won't cut off constantly.
Your skype chats on the computer you use will be recorded for pretty much forever. So if you need to go back through old conversations with people for something. Wether its crazy people threatening you and you have to show it to police, remembering someones phone number etc, wanting to know why people are so pissed off at you when you were drunk last night. Then it works out good for you. I recently spoke to Frostbitten on Skype to say hello to him on behalf of one of his good friends on war2. Ended up Copy pasting the dialogue over to him afterwards ^_^
Overall Skype is pretty awesome, if you haven't tryed it, give it a go.

I don't join "channels." I don't want to do voice chats or videos because I talk to my family on the phone or go see them. I just want to IM my friends.

I use skype for IM purposes only, its ok with that too (then again, I probably wouldn't use it if everyone else didn't)
