Sick dog = Emergency Vet Clinic rape

So last night around 11:30 my dog of 14 years was suddenly unable to walk or support his weight. I thought it could be the end. So I scramble around and find the nearest 24 hour vet clinic in my area. It was an hour away.
Upon arrival to the clinic the dr. seems to know what's wrong right away (Vestibular Disease) a sort of vertigo. So they give him a shot to treat it along with another shot of fluids for dehydration, he was throwing up like crazy. So i was there about an hour and they charge me 475.00. Today my dog is no better, still cant walk etc.
I guess I'll have to take him to his vet tomorrow if he isn't better.
I just can't believe people will take advantage of others this way. Sickening if you ask me.
Anyone share this type experience? Tell me if you think this is not unfair.

People are just trash. Some vets put a nail on x-rays to make it appear as a pet has swallowed it. They'll cut the animal open and everything to pretend they removed something that wasn't there to begin with. All the while they will treat the animal for whatever small ailment it had while laughing all the way to the bank having duped the owner into paying for a false operation. People suck, sorry to hear someone used your distress to their advantage.

Off topic - RIP Christopher Hitchens.

the cost of vet care is stupid just like health care is for humans. i don't know how they expect a lot of people to take care of their pets if any thing other than a check up and shots is needed. i'm sure lots of people just don't take their pets to a doctor.

our 4 year old newfoundland got mysteriously sick one day and we took him to an emergency vet in the middle of the night. they had no idea what was wrong with him and recommended we take him to columbia, MO where the neurological vet specialists are. the emergency center did nothing for him but still charged us over 500 dollars. we spend two days in columbia getting just about every test imaginable (the doctors recommended it and said it was the only way to possibly save his life). turns out he had a brain tumor and ended up dieing anyway. 4000 dollar bill. thanks a lot guys.

I tried to dispute some of the erroneous charges with my cc co. but no luck.
So tomorrow I'll have to take him to my regular vet & leave him there while I work. I'm betting the bill from my regular vet will not exceed 130 bux.

It sux. I can't feed or hydrate him. Can't get him to go outside.

it's called capitalism. profit is the only thing that matters in our system, even health of animals and humans take a backseat to the #1 priority of money.

My 2 year old Shepard/elkhound had a swollen face...

We took him to an emergency vet and he said it was just an infection gave us some meds and charged us around 300 bucks.

It went down slightly but never went away. A week later it got worse.

Took him to the vet and he had cracked one of his molars in half and it abcessed. 1200 dollars later the tooth is removed.

How the fuck can any decent vet miss a tooth cracked in half?? When the vet showed it to us I was pissed.

Well from the research I've done on this and what has been told to me so far. This is something he will rebound from. I hate to "put him down" if I know he will bounce back. I'll know more tomorrow when he see's his normal vet.

it sucks..we put about 2,000$ in our rottwieler back when she was about 4.
they said it was lymphoma at first then bird disease and she had to take shots every week.wasnt little shots either, dog had to get one with about a pint of stuff in it.
she got so bad all i could feed her was steak.then she quit eating which i thought was the end. i even dug her a grave cause i thought for sure she was going to die and the day before we was gonna put her down she was walking around and came back to herself, she lost an eye to whatever it was.
my thoery its just that dam pure breed genetics. a mutt is so much easier on the pocket book

I don't trust vets. To be honest if a pet of mine is sick I will call the vet and explain the symptoms, if it's something very serious I just put the animal down or offer it to the vet. I had a cat that was run over when I was young, we spent like a thousand bucks on surgery. It lived for a few more years but it was never the same.. Could have given that money to the animal shelter and kept dozens of animals alive.

My brother picked up a Basenji from a breeder and it had problems. His legs were wobbly and his feet were curving inward. Apparently it's a common problem of the breed, possibly caused by too much inbreeding. My brother had to pay a pretty penny for the dog to begin with, then another large chunk of change to get the surgery to fix the dog's legs. He asked the vet if there was anything he could do about the large surgery bill. The vet suggested he could get pet insurance on the animal. Then he could wait a few weeks, take it to another vet, and hope the other vet comes to the same diagnosis as him. The vet said unfortunately he could not do the surgery himself as it would be a "preexisting condition". My brother decided against the insurance and just paid for the operation himself. Fortunately the dog walks fine now. Something like this would not help in your situation as it was an emergency, but it's something to keep in mind if you are anticipating large vet bills down the road.

BTW, the Basenji is a really weird dog. It does not bark like normal dogs. It's tail curls like a pigs tail. My brother's dog has long legs and it's body shape almost looks like a baby deer. It has a very short coat and limited dander and no dog odor, so they are good for people with allergies. He has lots of energy and craves attention though, chewing everything and getting into lots of trouble if left unsupervised.

Obviously you aren't that affectionate with your pets...

Besenjis are cool dogs.

Ok so, this morning my dog was showing signs of improvement. He was able to walk somewhat & even went outside to do his business. Then when it got time for me to take him top the vet, he got all excited knowing he was going for a ride. Big improvement from the day before. After work I went by the vets to pick him up. They gave me medicine for him for the next 2 weeks, boarded him all day & had dr. examine him, & charged me $51. Wow, pretty nice, considering those jackyls at the emergency vet place charged me $475 for much less care and no boarding.
I'm so happy he's getting better that I no longer care about the money.

Loading trucks full of boxes of previously fully healthy animals that were all euthanized kind of changes your perception on this stuff. Maybe I see them as more dispensable but I wouldn't say that I'm not affectionate towards animals.

I don't think he was saying he wasn't affectionate, just more pragmatic about his approach to seriously sick animals. Not everyone can afford the huge vet bills. And you always run the risk of taking your friend to a vet that isn't skilled enough to properly diagnose the issue.

Did you find out about rates before going? Understandable if you didn't

When I called them before I left the house, they told me it would be $68. for the office visit before any treatment. The funny thing is there was no 68 dollar charge on the bill.

That is really screwed up... If you didn't sign/pay anything already, you shouldn't pay it. In any case you undoubtedly got mistreated.

I wonder what the break down of service was? Maybe the $68 dollars was for an initial treatment that only provides 10-20 minutes, and maybe they over price their shots. I've never paid more than $40 dollars for a shot personally.

Maybe if you like your regular vet you should ask them for a good 24 hr clinic that wont take advantage of you.

Does it though? I mean, you could say the same for a mortician then......

400 isn't that bad, these guys are doctors and go to medical school for years . They deserve to be comPensated . Sounds like u want a shaman or someone who can guess common ailments. If you are so inclined go webmd your dog if u wanna take chances with a life. My friends dogs cost 8k so I feel little sympathy, if u can't afford to take care of a dog you shouldn't own one

I'm guessing the reason those 24-hour places charge so much has more to do with staying in business than taking advantage of people in a desperate situation. Your normal vet only runs business hours where as these places have to pay staff to just sit around waiting for business and/or on-call rates for late nights.

Why don't you become a veterinarian then and charge reasonable prices? You'd be the best deal in town and everyone would flock to you. Soon you could expand and open shops all over the state and country. Show them fat cats who's boss.
