Internal Wireless Card Issue
I finished using my computer this morning, unplugged it, and put it in my bag. When i got to work the wireless card had vanished. The computer just doesn't recognize it anymore. There's a toggle switch on the top of my keyboard that is a little orange antenna, which is how it looks when I've disabled it. When it's enabled, it's blue. The button is completely unresponsive. Just stays orange all the time.
I'm using an HP G60-230US with Ubuntu 11.04.
Here is my ifconfig, which usually shows wlan0 even if it's disabled:
code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1f:16:7c:2e:bf
inet addr:10.0.0.2 Bcast:10.0.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

TX packets:12 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:720 (720.0 B) TX bytes:720 (720.0 B)
and here is my iwconfig:
code:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off

I really need help fixing this. If you need any other diagnostic information let me know what it is. I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate with Ubuntu so this one's over my head. _________________ “Imagine If You Wrapped A Percocet In A Slab Of Bacon, Fed It To A Woolly Mammoth, And Shouted ‘Dance, Hairy Boyfriend, Dance’ – That’s Torche.” -- Mike Huckabee

You should probably post this over at the Ubuntu forums. That's where I post when I have Ubuntu problems.

Alright I posted it there. Thanks for the referral. An answer here from one of you wizards would still be appreciated, though. What a pain.
This computer is about 3 years old and I only spent about $400 on it so it's amazing I've been able to keep it running at this level for this amount of time. I'm thinking of replacing it soon anyway, since I can deduct at least most of a new one from my taxes. _________________ “Imagine If You Wrapped A Percocet In A Slab Of Bacon, Fed It To A Woolly Mammoth, And Shouted ‘Dance, Hairy Boyfriend, Dance’ – That’s Torche.” -- Mike Huckabee

kub did you just direct me to those forums and then answer my question there? that seems like needless work for both of us dummy. _________________ “Imagine If You Wrapped A Percocet In A Slab Of Bacon, Fed It To A Woolly Mammoth, And Shouted ‘Dance, Hairy Boyfriend, Dance’ – That’s Torche.” -- Mike Huckabee

You included more info in your Ubuntu post than you did here. I found the information on your issue with this tidbit you included over there:
"wireless is disabled by hardware switch"
And FYI, it is generally not a good idea to insult people who are trying to help you. _________________ Give me a lever long enough and I shall move the world. - Archimedes

i know i was kidding with you, dummy. that thread you linked to is much closer to my issue than anything i've been able to find thus far. My card is Atheros apparently and not Broadcom, but it seems like both cards have similar issues. _________________ “Imagine If You Wrapped A Percocet In A Slab Of Bacon, Fed It To A Woolly Mammoth, And Shouted ‘Dance, Hairy Boyfriend, Dance’ – That’s Torche.” -- Mike Huckabee

One of those gurus fixed it. Really great community, except for the asshole that asked if i tried rebooting after i had spewed out a bunch of terminal lines that I had tried for diagnostics. _________________ “Imagine If You Wrapped A Percocet In A Slab Of Bacon, Fed It To A Woolly Mammoth, And Shouted ‘Dance, Hairy Boyfriend, Dance’ – That’s Torche.” -- Mike Huckabee

hey
dont take it as fixed yet,
from my previous expertise:
there's this worldwide known problem with a wide range laptop hp/compaq
(models from 2005-2008 most likely)
with this issue, called 'blue light' problem
what happened to your wireless card is the 'first sympton'
its gonna happen more often, then the video card will start failing and it will eventually go black. this is due to a bad quality tinfoil or whatever you wanna call it, soldering a component, it gets unsoldered with the heat
goggle it, 'hp blue light problem'
its called like that cuz when u start seeing the black screen only all those blue light at the keyb are the only thing on'
anyway, my suggestion is: sell it while it works.
*i fix computers on my free time, have seen dozen computers yes, it's fixable but the motherboard will eventually go beyond repair and would need replacement worth as much as the laptop itself
